TCCC Vision

Written by

Everything Starts From The Vision

Rev. Isaac Chang (Translated by Chi Lee)

It’s been two and a half month since I started serving as the senior pastor for TCCC.  After getting to know the congregation, I deeply sense that this church is like a big family.  Each individual in the congregation loves this spiritual home.  When possible, everyone in this church would proactively assist with Church’s duties, carry out church’s ministry and worship together.  For more than two years, TCCC was without a full-time pastor but through cell groups they were able to teach God’s words to one another and to care for one another.  It is very commendable that not only they were able to maintain the ministry but were also able to lead people to Christ during these two years.

When I was deciding on the offer from TCCC, 2 Peter 1: 5-8 came to my mind “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.  For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  This is Apostle Paul’s exhortation to those who received faith through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.  This passage reminds us that as a faithful group, we should make every effort to follow God’s direction in our belief and our lives.  This is what I pray for TCCC and I look forward to this church being shepherded and built in these directions.

(1) Be a group with strong faith

“With faith…”, this is the priority that Apostle Paul set to the disciples of church in the early days.  Because of faith, people accepted Jesus Christ as saviour and his salvation even though they have never physically met him.  In order for us, as disciples, to live a life that is pleased by God, we need to have faith to face the temptations.  In my prayer, I pray to God that through bible study, Sunday school, Sunday sermon and individual’s spiritual reading, we strengthen our faith base on the Truth from the bible.

(2) Be a group that influent others

We admire anyone who is able to show goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance and godliness.  This is also the teaching from the book of James that there need to be deeds with faith.  This should also be the direction of disciple’s spiritual growth.  With goodness, one needs knowledge to judge while self-control and perseverance are the fruits of spirit.  When one is willing to accept the Holy Spirit as the guide for his life, the strength from the Holy Spirit will express these fruits through the act of this person’s life.  Godliness does not refer to one’s outside appearance but rather, as mentioned above, is the result of the blossoming of the fruit of spirit.  For the past two months, I attended meetings among different cell group.  I was very joyful to see the trust, the sharing, the support and the prayers among each member of the cell group.  In my prayer, I pray to God that through Cell Groups, it will help us to blossom the fruit of spirit, share Jesus Christ’s love and build a group that can influent others.

(3) Be a group that care and consider for others

Peter followed by mentioning love: Love for brothers and sisters + Love for all others.  This love is put into practice by first loving brothers and sisters (Christians) and then expands the love to all others (non-Christians).  Whenever a member of TCCC or his/her family member got sick, the whole congregation would show God’s love and provide all different type of foods to this member until the fridge is jam packed.  Some even jokes that TCCC’s spirit is to make one gain weight, while I believe TCCC’s spirit is to love you till you faint.  In my prayer, I pray to God that through disciple’s love, this church becomes a group that is Caring and considerate for others.

(4) Be a group with missions

In Paul’s conclusion, if you can live out a life as described, this will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Disciple’s life develops through: knowing Christ, follow Christ, becoming like Christ, proclaim Christ and bear fruits that lead people to Christ.  In my prayer, I pray to God that he uses this church and enable us to become a group with missions to witness Christ.

Conclusion

When Mencius was describing his ideal social group, he said “to honor old people as we do our own aged parents, and care for other's children as one's own”.  This is in alignment with Confucius’s belief that “Therefore people not only regarded their own parents as parents and their own children as children. The old people were able to enjoy their old age, the young men were able to employ their talent, the junior had the elders to look up, and the helpless widows, orphans and cripples and deformed were well taken care of.”  No doubt this is traditional Chinese theory of love; however what is the progress like after thousands of years?  Is the reality moving closer to this theory?  Only in Christ, God’s kingdom and in the follower of Christ will enable us to move toward this vision.
